The morning sun cast golden light across the Sunlit Shallows. The sky was bright blue and the waves were gentle. Scuba Bob stretched his arms and took a deep breath of salty air. Today was going to be special.
"Ready for another adventure?" asked Captain Coral, walking up the beach path with a big smile on his face.
"Always!" said Scuba Bob, grabbing his notebook, a pencil, and his goggles. He tucked them into his backpack and ran to meet his friends.
The whole crew was already at the beach. Finn was doing flips in the shallow water, splashing everywhere. Wanda was using her tentacles to write letters in the wet sand. Pearl was sitting on a rock, reading a book about ocean animals.
"Today we put everything together!" said Captain Coral, clapping his hands. "You have been practicing math and reading all through Grade 1. Let us see what you remember!"
The crew walked along the shore. The sand was warm under their feet. Before long, they found 15 shells of different sizes scattered near the water. Some were big and round. Others were small and pointy.
Scuba Bob sorted them into two groups: 7 big shells and 8 small shells. "Let me check," he said. "7 + 8 = 15! They all add up."
"Great job!" said Captain Coral. "How many more small shells are there than big shells?"
Scuba Bob thought for a moment. "15 minus 7 equals... 8! There are 8 small shells. That is 1 more than the 7 big ones."
Further down the beach, they saw words written in the sand: BRAVE, SMART, KIND, STRONG. The letters were big and neat.
"Who wrote those?" asked Scuba Bob.
Wanda raised a tentacle. "I did! I used my tentacles to write in the sand."
Pearl read the words out loud. "Brave. Smart. Kind. Strong. Those are adjectives," she said. "Adjectives are words that describe something. And these words describe all of you!"
Finn blushed. "Adjectives describe nouns. And I am a noun — a person!"
"That is right," said Pearl. "A noun is a person, place, or thing. And an adjective tells us more about it."
Then Wanda had an idea. "Let me retell our whole day using sequence words," she said. She cleared a flat spot in the sand and wrote: "First, five friends met at the beach. Next, they found 15 shells. Then, they read kind words in the sand. Last, they realized that friendship was the best treasure of all."
"Sequence words: first, next, then, last!" said Finn. "They help us tell a story in order."
As the afternoon went on, the sun began to sink lower. The sky changed from blue to orange to purple. It was beautiful.
Scuba Bob found 3 sand dollars half buried in the wet sand near the rocks. He showed them to Finn.
"I found some too!" said Finn. He held up 5 more sand dollars.
"3 + 5 = 8 sand dollars total!" said Scuba Bob.
"If I take my 3 back," said Scuba Bob, "you keep 8 minus 3 equals 5!"
"Math is everywhere," laughed Captain Coral. "Even on the beach!"
The crew sat together as the last bit of sunlight faded. Scuba Bob pulled out his notebook. He wanted to remember this day forever.
"This was the best day ever," whispered Scuba Bob. He wrote one final number in his notebook: the number of friends who were there. 5. Five friends. That was the best number of all.
"Same time tomorrow?" asked Captain Coral.
"Same time tomorrow!" they all said together, and headed home under the first few stars.
