One bright morning, Wanda was the first one at the beach. She had found something amazing the day before — a path behind the big rocks that led to a hidden cove. She could not wait to show her friends.
"Follow me!" said Wanda when the crew arrived. She led them around the rocks, through a narrow gap, and into a small, secret bay. The water was calm and clear. The sand was soft and white.
"Wow!" said Scuba Bob. "I did not know this was here!"
"Welcome to Starfish Cove," said Wanda proudly.
Captain Coral looked around. "This is a perfect spot for exploring. Let us see what lives in these tide pools."
The first tide pool was right at their feet. Pearl leaned in close. "I see starfish!" she said. "Count them!"
The crew counted together: 2, 4, 6, 8. There were 8 starfish, lined up in 4 pairs. "We counted by twos!" said Scuba Bob. "2, 4, 6, 8."
"Let me try a doubles problem," said Captain Coral. "If there are 4 starfish on this side and 4 on that side, how many is that?"
"4 + 4 = 8!" said Finn. "Doubles are easy. Both numbers are the same!"
They moved to the next pool. This one had 10 tiny crabs scurrying across the bottom. Wanda gently lifted a rock and found 5 more hiding underneath.
"5 + 5 = 10!" said Scuba Bob. "Wait, that is the crabs we already counted. The 5 hiding plus the... hmm." He thought again. "We had 10 crabs. Then 5 more. 10 + 5 = 15 crabs total!"
"Great adding!" said Pearl.
Pearl pulled out a little card. "Let us play a naming game," she said. "I will say a word and you tell me if it is a noun — a person, a place, or a thing."
"Starfish!" said Pearl.
"That is a thing. It is a noun!" said Wanda.
"Beach!" said Pearl.
"That is a place. Also a noun!" said Finn.
"Captain Coral!" said Pearl.
"That is a person. A noun too!" laughed Scuba Bob.
"You are all right," said Pearl. "A noun is a person, a place, or a thing. The ocean is full of nouns!"
Captain Coral pointed to two pools side by side. "Which pool has more creatures?" he asked. The left pool had 8 starfish. The right pool had 15 crabs.
"15 is greater than 8!" said Scuba Bob. "The crab pool has more. 15 > 8."
"And 8 is less than 15," added Wanda. "8 < 15."
Near the edge of the cove, Finn found a group of 6 sea snails climbing slowly up a rock. He counted them by twos: "2, 4, 6. Six snails!"
"How many creatures have we found so far?" asked Captain Coral.
Scuba Bob counted on his fingers. "8 starfish, 15 crabs, and 6 snails. 8 + 15 is... 23. Then 23 + 6 is... 29 creatures!"
"Almost 30!" said Wanda.
As the sun climbed higher, the water in the cove shimmered like glass. Wanda sat on a warm rock and looked out at the sea. "I am glad I found this cove," she said. "It is our special place now."
"Every explorer needs a secret spot," said Captain Coral. "And you found ours, Wanda. Great job."
The crew promised to come back to Starfish Cove again soon. As they walked home along the beach, Scuba Bob said, "Today I learned three things. Nouns are everywhere. Doubles make adding faster. And hidden coves are the best kind of surprise."
