🔤 Words to Know
Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.
Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.
Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.
Eleven-year-old Scuba Bob stared into the deepest, darkest water he had ever seen. The Abyss stretched below the submarine like an endless black void. No light. No sound. Just darkness.
"Welcome to Grade 6," said Captain Coral. "The Abyss. The deepest ocean zone. Everything you have learned has prepared you for this."
The crew descended slowly. The pressure gauges climbed. The temperature dropped.
"Let us begin with ratios," said Captain Coral. "A ratio compares two quantities. If there are 3 lanternfish for every 2 anglerfish, the ratio is 3 to 2, or 3:2."
"If we see 15 lanternfish, how many anglerfish should we expect?" he asked.
"The ratio is 3:2," said Scuba Bob. "15 divided by 3 is 5. So multiply 2 by 5: 10 anglerfish."
"We can also write ratios as fractions," said Captain Coral. "3 to 2 is the same as 3/2."
Pearl set up the reading lesson. "In Grade 6, we analyze how authors develop their arguments," she said. "A strong argument has a claim, reasons, and evidence."
She read from a scientific article: "Deep-sea exploration should receive more funding. First, the deep ocean is Earth's largest habitat, yet less than 5% has been explored. Second, deep-sea organisms produce compounds that may lead to new medicines. Third, understanding the deep ocean helps us predict how climate change will affect the entire planet."
"The claim is that deep-sea exploration should receive more funding," said Scuba Bob. "The reasons are: it is mostly unexplored, it may contain medicines, and it helps with climate research."
"Is the evidence convincing?" asked Pearl.
"The statistic about 'less than 5% explored' is strong because it is specific," said Scuba Bob. "But saying organisms 'may lead' to medicines is weaker because it is uncertain."
"Excellent critical analysis!" said Pearl.
The submarine detected something on sonar. Captain Coral introduced negative numbers. "Sea level is 0. Above sea level is positive. Below sea level is negative. We are at -4,500 meters."
"If we descend 500 more meters, where are we?" he asked.
"-4,500 minus 500 equals -5,000 meters," said Scuba Bob.
"Which is deeper: -4,500 or -5,000?" asked Finn.
"-5,000 is deeper," said Scuba Bob. "On a number line, -5,000 is farther from zero. In the ocean, a bigger negative number means deeper water."
"What is the absolute value of -5,000?" asked Captain Coral.
"5,000!" said Scuba Bob. "Absolute value is the distance from zero, regardless of direction. |-5,000| = 5,000."
As the submarine touched down on the abyssal plain, Scuba Bob looked out into the darkness and smiled. Grade 6 was going to push him further than ever. And he was ready.
