🔤 Words to Know
Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.
Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.
Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.
The submarine followed a deep trench that cut through the abyssal plain like a scar in the Earth. The walls dropped away steeply on both sides, descending into an even darker void below.
"This trench is one of the deepest places on the planet," said Captain Coral. "Let us use integers to describe our position."
He drew a vertical number line. Sea level = 0. The submarine was at -6,000 meters. A fish swam past at -5,800 meters. The trench floor was at -8,200 meters.
"Order these from highest to lowest: -5,800, -6,000, -8,200," said Captain Coral.
"-5,800 > -6,000 > -8,200," said Scuba Bob. "On a number line, -5,800 is closest to zero, so it is the highest point."
"How far is it from the sub to the trench floor?" asked Finn.
"Distance from -6,000 to -8,200," said Scuba Bob. "I find the absolute value of the difference: |-6,000 - (-8,200)| = |2,200| = 2,200 meters."
Pearl discussed analyzing how a chapter or scene fits into the overall structure of a text. "In a novel, each chapter serves a purpose," she said. "An opening chapter introduces characters and setting. A climax chapter contains the most intense conflict. A resolution chapter wraps things up."
"Our trench expedition is like the climax of our Grade 6 story," said Scuba Bob. "The deepest, most challenging part."
Captain Coral gave a ratio table problem. "At this depth, for every 3 minutes of diving, we use 5 liters of oxygen. Fill in the table."
"3 min = 5L. 6 min = 10L. 9 min = 15L. 12 min = 20L," said Scuba Bob. "The rule is multiply minutes by 5/3 to get liters."
"If we have 60 liters total, how many minutes can we stay?"
"60 divided by 5 times 3 = 60 times 3/5 = 36 minutes," said Scuba Bob.
A strange, blind fish drifted past the window. It had no eyes at all — just smooth skin where eyes should be. "It evolved in total darkness," said Captain Coral. "Eyes would be useless here."
"That is a powerful metaphor for adaptation," said Pearl. "In writing, we adapt our style to our audience, just as creatures adapt to their environment."
