🔤 Words to Know
Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.
Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.
Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.
Faint lights pulsed in a rhythmic pattern deep in the trench. As the submarine drew closer, the crew realized the lights were coming from a massive colony of creatures communicating through bioluminescent signals — a code.
"They are using patterns!" said Wanda. "Long flash, short flash, long flash... it is like a language."
Captain Coral used this to teach expressions and equations. "Let us say a long flash lasts x seconds and a short flash lasts 2 seconds. If the pattern is 3 long flashes and 4 short flashes, write an expression for the total time."
"3x + 4(2) = 3x + 8 seconds," said Scuba Bob.
"If the total pattern takes 20 seconds, solve for x," said Captain Coral.
"3x + 8 = 20. Subtract 8: 3x = 12. Divide by 3: x = 4 seconds per long flash," said Scuba Bob.
"Now evaluate: if x = 5, what is 3x + 8?"
"3(5) + 8 = 15 + 8 = 23 seconds," said Scuba Bob.
Pearl connected the bioluminescent code to writing. "Every form of communication has structure," she said. "The creatures use patterns of light. Authors use patterns of words. Both follow rules."
"In argument writing, the structure is: claim → reasons → evidence → conclusion," said Pearl. "Let me write an argument about this discovery."
She wrote: "Claim: Bioluminescent communication proves that deep-sea intelligence is more complex than previously thought. Reason 1: The creatures use distinct patterns, suggesting intentional signaling. Evidence: We observed a repeating sequence of long and short flashes. Reason 2: The patterns changed when new creatures approached. Evidence: The sequence shifted from 3-long-4-short to 2-long-6-short. Conclusion: Further study of deep-sea communication could transform our understanding of ocean intelligence."
"Every claim is supported," said Scuba Bob. "That is what makes it a strong argument."
Captain Coral posed another equation: "2(x + 3) = 16. Solve for x."
"Distribute: 2x + 6 = 16. Subtract 6: 2x = 10. Divide by 2: x = 5!" said Scuba Bob.
