🔤 Words to Know

Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.

Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.

Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.

The submarine discovered an undersea volcanic vent — not erupting, but radiating immense heat. The water around it shimmered like a mirage.

"The temperature varies by location," said Captain Coral. "Let us collect data and analyze it statistically."

They measured temperatures at 6 points around the vent: 45°, 38°, 52°, 41°, 38°, 50°.

"Find the mean," said Captain Coral.

"Add all values: 45 + 38 + 52 + 41 + 38 + 50 = 264. Divide by 6 measurements: 264 ÷ 6 = 44 degrees mean temperature," said Scuba Bob.

"Median?"

"Order the data: 38, 38, 41, 45, 50, 52. Six values, so the median is the average of the 3rd and 4th: (41 + 45) ÷ 2 = 43 degrees," said Scuba Bob.

"Mode?"

"38 degrees — it appears twice, more than any other," said Finn.

"Range?"

"52 minus 38 equals 14 degrees," said Wanda.

Pearl discussed evaluating claims in different media. "A documentary, a news article, and a social media post might all discuss volcanic vents," she said. "But each source has different reliability."

"A peer-reviewed scientific paper is the most reliable because experts checked the data," said Pearl. "A social media post might be interesting but could contain errors or opinions presented as facts."

"How do we evaluate sources?" asked Scuba Bob.

"Ask: Who wrote it? What evidence do they provide? Is there bias? Can it be verified?" said Pearl.

Captain Coral connected statistics to geometry. "The vent opening is shaped like a triangle with a base of 6 meters and height of 4 meters. What is the area?"

"Area of a triangle is 1/2 times base times height," said Scuba Bob. "1/2 times 6 times 4 = 12 square meters."

"The vent shaft is a rectangular prism, 3 m x 2 m x 10 m deep. Volume with fractional edges: the actual width is 2.5 m."

"3 times 2.5 times 10 = 75 cubic meters," said Scuba Bob.
