🔤 Words to Know

Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.

Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.

Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.

At the deepest point of their journey, the crew encountered a mystery. An area of the ocean floor was completely devoid of life — a perfect circle of empty sand surrounded by thriving communities.

"Why is nothing living here?" asked Finn.

"That is the Abyssal Mystery," said Captain Coral. "Scientists have debated this for years."

Pearl seized the teaching moment. "Let us practice writing arguments about what might cause this," she said. "Each person will make a claim, provide reasons, and cite evidence."

Finn argued: "Claim: A chemical in the sediment prevents growth. Reason: The circle has sharp boundaries, suggesting something in the ground itself. Evidence: Similar dead zones have been found near mineral deposits."

Wanda argued: "Claim: A large predator clears this area regularly. Reason: The circle is perfectly round, like a feeding pattern. Evidence: Some deep-sea creatures create circular feeding paths."

"Both arguments are well-structured," said Pearl. "To determine which is stronger, we would need to gather more evidence — test the sediment, set up cameras, compare with known dead zones."

While debating, Captain Coral taught inequalities. "The mystery zone has a radius of r meters. We know r is greater than 10 but less than 15. Write that as an inequality."

"10 < r < 15," said Scuba Bob.

"On a number line, how would you graph x > 3?" asked Captain Coral.

"An open circle at 3, with an arrow pointing to the right," said Scuba Bob. "Open because 3 itself is NOT included."

"What about x ≤ 7?"

"A closed circle at 7, arrow pointing left," said Scuba Bob. "Closed because 7 IS included."

The mystery remained unsolved, but that was okay. "In science AND in reading," said Pearl, "not every question has an answer yet. What matters is how rigorously we investigate."
