🌟 Story 7: The Deep Current

A deep, powerful current swept through the abyss, carrying nutrients and creatures from miles away. The crew studied it to understand ocean circulation.

Captain Coral introduced dependent and independent variables. "The independent variable is what we change. The dependent variable is what changes as a result."

"If we study how depth affects temperature, depth is independent and temperature is dependent," said Scuba Bob. "Temperature depends on depth."

They collected data and made a table:

Depth (m): 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000
Temp (°C): 10, 6, 4, 3, 2

"As depth increases, temperature decreases," observed Finn. "They have an inverse relationship."

Pearl taught about formal vs informal English. "In a scientific report, we use formal English: precise vocabulary, complete sentences, no slang. In a text to a friend, we use informal English: casual words, abbreviations, personal tone."

"Formal: 'The data indicates an inverse correlation between depth and temperature,'" said Pearl. "Informal: 'The deeper you go, the colder it gets!'"

"Same information, different register," said Scuba Bob.

Captain Coral posed an equation problem. "If temperature = 12 - 2d where d is depth in thousands of meters, what is the temperature at 3,000 meters?"

"d = 3. Temperature = 12 - 2(3) = 12 - 6 = 6°C," said Scuba Bob. "That matches our data!"

"At what depth does temperature reach 0?"

"0 = 12 - 2d. 2d = 12. d = 6. At 6,000 meters," said Scuba Bob.
