Abyss — An extremely deep, seemingly bottomless space.

Proportional reasoning — Using ratios and relationships to solve problems.

Evidence-based analysis — Drawing conclusions supported by specific facts and observations.

The submarine's instruments detected an anomaly — a structure on the ocean floor that was clearly not natural. As they approached, they realized it was a lost laboratory, abandoned decades ago by deep-sea researchers.

"The scientists left data everywhere," said Captain Coral. "Let us analyze it."

They found statistical data about deep-sea creatures. A study had measured the lengths of 20 specimens of a rare fish species. The data showed a mean length of 34 cm, a median of 32 cm, and a mode of 30 cm.

"The mean is higher than the median," said Scuba Bob. "That suggests some specimens were much longer than the rest, pulling the average up."

"That is called skew," said Captain Coral. "When the mean and median are different, it tells us the data is not perfectly balanced."

Pearl found research papers in the laboratory. "Let us practice synthesizing multiple sources," she said. "Source A describes the fish's diet. Source B describes its habitat. Source C describes its behavior."

"By combining all three, we get a complete picture," said Pearl. "No single source tells the whole story. That is why researchers use multiple sources."

Captain Coral posed a surface area problem. "The laboratory is shaped like a rectangular box: 8 m long, 5 m wide, 3 m tall. What is the surface area?"

"Surface area is the sum of all faces," said Scuba Bob. "Two faces are 8x5 = 40. Two are 8x3 = 24. Two are 5x3 = 15. Total: 2(40) + 2(24) + 2(15) = 80 + 48 + 30 = 158 square meters."

"Now GCF: The lab has 36 data files and 48 sample jars. What is the greatest common factor?"

"Factors of 36: 1,2,3,4,6,9,12,18,36. Factors of 48: 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,48. GCF is 12," said Scuba Bob.

"They could arrange items in groups of 12 — 3 groups of files and 4 groups of jars," said Finn.
