Character — A person or animal in a story.
Setting — Where and when a story takes place.
Plot — The events that happen in a story from beginning to end.
Pearl picked up a book about ocean adventures. "Every good story has three important parts," Pearl told Finn.
"First, there are the characters — the people or animals the story is about. In our adventures, the characters are Scuba Bob, Captain Coral, Finn, Wanda, and Pearl."
"Second, there is the setting — WHERE and WHEN the story happens. Our setting is the Open Ocean during the daytime."
"Third, there is the plot — WHAT happens in the story. The plot has a beginning, a middle with a problem, and an end with a solution."
Finn tried identifying parts in a story they read: "A little octopus (character) lived in a coral cave (setting). One day, a current swept away her favorite shell. She searched everywhere and finally found it near the surface."
"The problem was the lost shell," said Finn. "The solution was finding it near the surface. That is the plot!"
"When you can identify characters, setting, and plot, you truly understand a story," said Pearl.
