🔤 Words to Know
Theme — The big message or lesson that the author wants the reader to learn.
Evidence — Details from the text that support an answer or idea.
Pearl read Finn a story about a young squid who wanted to explore beyond the reef, even though everyone said it was too dangerous.
"The squid was scared but went anyway. She discovered a beautiful new world and came home to tell everyone about it."
"What is the theme of this story?" asked Pearl.
Finn thought carefully. "The theme is that being brave can lead to amazing discoveries, even when you are afraid."
"Great!" said Pearl. "The theme is NOT just what happened — it is the lesson or message the author wants you to take away."
"How do I find the theme?" asked Finn.
"Look at what the main character learns, how they change, and what the conflict teaches them. Then ask: what message is the author sharing about life?"
"The theme is supported by evidence from the text," Pearl added. "The squid being scared but going anyway IS the evidence for the bravery theme."
