🔤 Words to Know
Regroup — To trade 10 ones for 1 ten when adding.
Carry — Moving a group of 10 to the next column when adding.
Wanda was counting sea creatures at the sandy channel. There were 36 sea snails on one rock and 27 more on another.
"36 + 27... let me start with the ones," said Wanda. "6 + 7 = 13. That is more than 9! What do I do?"
"You regroup!" said Scuba Bob. "Write the 3 in the ones place and carry the 1 to the tens column."
Wanda continued: "Now the tens: 3 + 2 = 5, plus the carried 1 = 6. So 36 + 27 = 63!"
"Whenever the ones column adds up to 10 or more, you regroup," said Scuba Bob. "Trade 10 ones for 1 ten."
Wanda tried 48 + 35: "8+5=13. Write 3, carry 1. Tens: 4+3+1=8. Answer: 83!"
"Regrouping is just organized carrying!" said Wanda.
