Factor — A number you multiply. In 3 x 5, both 3 and 5 are factors.
Times table — A chart showing multiplication facts for a number.
Wanda was building a times table for the numbers 1 through 5.
"Let me start with the 2s," said Wanda. "2 x 1 = 2. 2 x 2 = 4. 2 x 3 = 6. 2 x 4 = 8. 2 x 5 = 10. The pattern is counting by 2s!"
"Now the 5s," said Scuba Bob. "5 x 1 = 5. 5 x 2 = 10. 5 x 3 = 15. 5 x 4 = 20. 5 x 5 = 25. Products of 5 always end in 0 or 5!"
Wanda tried the 3s: "3, 6, 9, 12, 15. And the 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20."
"A factor is any number you multiply," explained Scuba Bob. "In 3 x 5 = 15, both 3 and 5 are factors. 15 is the product."
"Once I memorize these facts, I can solve problems super fast!" said Wanda.
"The times tables are like a superpower," said Scuba Bob. "They unlock harder math later."
