🔤 Words to Know
Simile — A comparison using LIKE or AS. Example: as brave as a lion.
Metaphor — A comparison that says something IS something else. Example: the ocean is a mirror.
Personification — Giving human qualities to non-human things. Example: the waves danced.
Captain Coral showed Pearl three types of figurative language using ocean examples.
"A simile compares using LIKE or AS: The whale was as big as a school bus. The jellyfish floated like a parachute."
"A metaphor says something IS something else: The ocean is a world of secrets. The coral reef is a city of color."
"Personification gives human qualities to non-human things: The waves whispered to the shore. The wind howled through the canyon."
Pearl tried writing his own: "Simile: The eel was as slippery as soap. Metaphor: The deep ocean is a blanket of darkness. Personification: The current tugged at my arm, pulling me forward."
"Figurative language makes writing come alive," said Captain Coral. "It helps readers SEE and FEEL what you describe."
