🔤 Words to Know
Commutative property — Changing the order of factors does not change the product. 3 x 4 = 4 x 3.
Order — The arrangement or sequence of numbers.
Scuba Bob discovered something interesting: "3 x 4 = 12. And 4 x 3 = 12. They are the same!"
"That is the commutative property of multiplication!" said Finn. "You can switch the order of the factors and the product stays the same."
Scuba Bob tested more: "2 x 7 = 14 and 7 x 2 = 14. It works! 5 x 3 = 15 and 3 x 5 = 15."
"Think about it with groups," said Finn. "3 groups of 4 fish is the same total as 4 groups of 3 fish. Both equal 12 fish!"
"This means if I forget 8 x 3, I can think 3 x 8 instead! Same answer!" said Scuba Bob.
"The commutative property cuts the number of facts you need to memorize almost in half," said Finn. "If you know 6 x 7 = 42, you automatically know 7 x 6 = 42 too."
